Capturing the Change!

In September this year the Save Koh Tao Group will host the second of their film festivals for Koh Tao this year. The forum has been designed to allow people the opportunity to showcase not only their filmmaking skills but also to highlight the environmental movement on Koh Tao. This year, the crew from Eco Koh Tao, led by MSDT Simon Dowling have spent the last few months cataloguing and capturing the immense changes that have taken place in this very hot year...

Mango Bay Snorkeling Lines

Earlier this year we ventured to Mango Bay to install some floated ropes to mark out the shallow corals. The aim was twofold, to protect the shallow corals from boat traffic and to protect the numerous Snorkelers that visit Mango Bay on a daily basis. Since the initial installment we have been back to extend the line and make the area of coverage much greater. In the ensuing months some of the lines has broken and/or received varying degrees of damage...

Monthly Beach and Dive Site Clean Up: Sairee

Today was our biggest turnout ever for a cleanup with 47 people were on board heading to Sairee to help make a difference on our small beautiful island, Koh Tao. One of the main focuses of our regular dive site and beach clean ups is raising awareness. Over the past few years we’ve been educating people to refrain from bringing up rubbish that is not causing any more damage. For example a glass bottle can provide substrate for other organisms and a home for a fish or shrimp. If we take it out of the water it becomes part of Koh Tao’s land fill and provides little, if any further good...

New mooring Buoy Installed at Twins

As part of our marine conservation activities on Koh Tao we are involved in helping to ensure that Koh Tao has a well maintained system of mooring buoys and mooring lines. We have recently established new mooring lines at both Twins and Green Rock and having recently 'adopted' Twins as one of our dive sites under Marine Conservation Koh Tao's 'Adopt a Reef' program we thought it only fitting to ensure that we have the most well moored dive site on the island...

Coral Bleaching Update Koh Tao

Over the past few months increasing sea temperatures and intense sunlight coupled with flat calm seas and low tides have lead to the most stark and vivid changes to our reefs on Koh Tao that any of us have ever seen. June (especially late June) saw a huge reduction in the stress on the local reef. Sea temperatures dropped back to 30 degrees Celsius (from highs of 32 underwater and up to 34 on the surface, wind and cloud cover increased, visibility dropped all aiding the recovery of the coral...

New Buoy Line for Green Rock

An afternoon dive to one of Koh Tao’s premier dive sites, Chumphon Pinnacle gave us the opportunity to head to Green Rock on the way back and replace the buoy line which was in much need of repair. As part of the Marine Conservation Koh Tao’s Mooring Buoy Project, Eco Koh Tao and Crystal Dive teamed up to replace the buoy line at Green Rock, a popular dive location that suffers from strong waves and currents and often loses its buoy line...
