Hin Fai: Koh Tao Biorock

Two years ago, as part of our marine conservation program on Koh Tao we received 1000 giant clams (tridacna maxima) from the Thai Navy to raise until big enough to transplant onto the surrounding reefs. The initial batch of clams were placed in cages in Aow Leuk Bay on Koh Tao’s south-east coast. Mortality rates where high during the first few months but two years on approximately 50% survived to maturity. 12 months ago the majority of these were transferred to the surrounding reefs in Aow Leuk with the remaining clams staying in their caged home...

Coral Disease Study on Koh Tao

Coral disease is a relatively new phenomena in the world of marine biology. Such diseases were unknown 20 or 30 years ago and it is only more recently that their prevalence has been brought to light. Diseases are more common as water quality decreases and we humans pump more and more contaminants (chemicals, pollution and other nutrients) into the water. Coral Diseases proliferate in many environments predominantly due to the change in water chemistry as a result of anthropogenic influences...

Reef Check Begins for 2011

Our first two Eco divers for 2011, Anke Deppermann & Willem Gladisch were certified this week kicking off what we hope to be a big Eco year for Eco Koh Tao & Crystal Dive. Both her and Will were tired of swimming around not knowing what everything is and wanting a more detailed insight into the marine ecosystem.

"It's great to look at things in so much detail" said Anke during the three day course...
