Hin
Fai - Koh Tao Biorock
Koh Tao’s
electrified reef, Hin Fai has been online for just over two &
a half years now and has been progressing nicely. On a bright and
sunny day IDCS Nathan Cook joined Eco divers Petra Vasony and Julia
Stewart as well as some recreational divers for some eco diving
at the Biorock site.

The
aim of the dive was to transplant some coral fragments from the
surrounding area onto the artificial structures where they benefit
from being out of the sediment and attached to the electrical current
running through the Biorock.

Biorock
is one of the few reef restoration techniques that addresses the
dual issues of climate change and ocean acidification by changing
the water chemistry in the immediate vicinity making the water more
basic. This in turn assists the corals’ growth by making their
building blocks (calcium carbonate) easier to access.

It was
a great afternoon with a stiff current making the diving challenging
but rewarding. Thank you to all who participated.
